Level 1 Options - Angelica, Hainite and Athena - Media Studies

The Media Studies Teacher here at Tamaki College is Ms Emery. We asked her a few questions based on what NCEA would be like if we chose the option "Media Studies".

In L1 Media Studies 20 credits are offered over the year. 3 assessments are internal and 2 assessments are external. The externals are worth 4 credits each. 

For L2 Media Studies 21 credits are offered and for L3 Media Studies 20 credits are offered to each student. There is one external for those levels.

Media Studies is an Approved Subject at Level 3, which is important if you want to go to University. All levels offer Merit and Excellence Endorsement

Media Studies is connected to so many different career options, but the majority of them are in the Arts Industries. So if you're interested in Journalism, Radio, Television or Film Production, Newspapers, Script writing, Acting, Writing, or Advertising, then Media Studies is the place to go.

Here is Ms Emery's word of advice on the job opportunities on this option.

In order to gain credits the best strategy is to attend class every lesson, complete the homework, classwork and assessments, according to the achievement criteria, and LOVE watching, talking about, critiquing and participating in ALL forms of Media. So when the class is asked to go home and watch television for homework, I am serious. I really do want the class to go home and watch television. Or, if there's an amazing new movie out. I EXPECT my students to go see it. And then talk about it in class. Or, take the class along too. Or, listen to a wide range of radio stations. Or, read a wide range of newspapers. Or, make a film. Or, play the latest game. Or, Make a Vlog. Or, write a script. I expect total dedication to Film Club, that means attending film screenings every fortnight after school. (By the way, Film Club this Thursday in B8 is the classic, 'Singing in the Rain'. You're welcome to join us. Bring your own popcorn Media Studies rocks BIG TIME!

Matariki - Angelica

Matariki is celebrated once a year in mid-winter, either late May or early June. Matariki is a cluster of 7 stars or sisters, also known as the Pleiades. It means the 'Eyes Of God' or 'Little Eyes'. It is when Maori's celebrate a new year, new beginning and new journey of life. :-)

The World Cup - Angelica

The country I'm doing is England. It is the most populated country in the United Kingdom. It's capital is London and includes many small islands such as the Isle of Wight and Hayling Island. It's most popular sport is Soccer. 

A Tradition dish in England is Yorkshire Pudding. This dish is not usually eaten as a dessert like other puddings but instead as part of a main course. Yorkshire pudding is made from flour, eggs and milk. Another traditional dish I am familiar with and enjoy eating is Shepherds Pie. It is made of mince, mixed with vegetables and mash potato to top it up. 

There are very talented musicians from England that are well known. Such as, One Direction;), The Beatles, Elton John, Lily Allen, David Bowie, Cold-play and much more.

Two artists I enjoy listening to from England are Jessie J and Rita Ora. 

The National Dress for male represent the colours of St George and the National Dress for female represent the colours of St Edmund the Old English King. The materials it is made out of are wool, leather, steel, linen and simple dyes. 

Arts Fest is one of the largest art festivals which is held in Birmingham. The talents showcased are classical music and song to traditional dancing. Theater is another very important part of the English culture.

England is famous for many things and people. For example one of it's top players in soccer, David Beckham. Also it is well known for Fish and Chips, Big Ben Pies, Red Buses, Black cabs, Oasis, The Beatles, and the one and only, One Direction;)

My Options Next Year - Angelica

Next year I am thinking of taking Catering and Music to boost my credits for NCEA LEVEL 1. 

In 3 or 4 years time, when I finish college, I want to go University and from there find a career that will

FIRST STEP: 

ADD DRIED INGREDIENTS, THE COFFEE AND SUGAR IN TO THE CUP.

SECOND STEP: 

POUR IN THE HOT WATER FROM THE KETTLE CAREFULLY. 

THIRD STEP: 

APPLY THE MILK.

FOURTH STEP: 

STIR WITH A TEASPOON.

Athletics - Angelica

After a whole period practising the day before, today was the day. A day of chanting, teamwork, representing your house, running, activities and overall fun. It was Tamaki College's Athletics Day for 2014. I had a sore throat and had already lost my voice from practising, however I was excited to represent my house, Puriri for another year. 

After all houses beginning with Puriri, then Rata, followed by Totara and lastly Kowhai made our way to our areas on the field, we started off with the chant battle. 

Totara went up, followed by Rata. Now it was Puriri's turn. We begun with "Blue steady, Puriri are ready". 

After one race, another one came. I competed in the first race, which was the race we had to run around the field 3 times and which gave me 5th place. I also competed in another race which was one whole lap around the field, and came 2nd. The second to last race I competed in was the 100 meter race, and I came 3rd. Lastly I joined the relay race, with a mixture of year 9's and 10's. 

My highlight for Athletics Day 2014 was competing to be very honest. Although we placed third, it was better then coming last. Also even though I didn't come first, competing and participating is what counted. I was proud of Puriri and proud walking around dressed in Blue. 

What a good way to start off this year, and to get closer with everyone. :)

First Week Back ~ Angelica

To summarize my first week back at school for 2014, 

For me, returning to Tamaki College felt like another whole new start to be honest. It felt like It was my first year again. I hadn't seen anyone since last year which is why I felt like I don't know anyone. However, my first day back, I felt welcome again and got more confident again. I was happy to still be with my fellow class mates from last year, still keeping that PFN blood. To me being a year 10 doesn't change anything. I still know my limits that I am in the junior syndicate. The learning process still remains the same this year, just different classrooms, different teachers, new faces, and of course extra extra long walks. However this year, I must put my mind to everything I do and prepare myself for next year, NCEA LEVEL 1. This year is no muck around year, although there will be fun activities and events throughout the year. 

To add on to my summary, each day got better and better. I was more familiar with my new teachers, and whole new set of my timetable. It was good to see everyone again. Seeing the year 9's faces just remind me of last year. I could see there reaction to how big and different college is, compared to intermediate and primary. Now this is a year for me to better my schooling life. This is my time to change and become the girl I was last year during the first two terms.

Angelica - Feedback

- I have leant how to write an essay, history about peoples backgrounds and cultures, more about migration and government, and experiments on speeding and chemical/physical reactions.

- How to manage my own English website.

- I didn't know anyone but Mino when I started so I suppose I have learnt more about my friends and their backgrounds.

- I have learnt that my Mentor has experienced school life just like us and has worked her way through to get a good job to better her life.

- I have helped my little 5 year older brother by helping him with his homework.

- By pushing myself to get on with my work and striving, However I have had a lot of ups and downs that has let down my learning this year and hopefully next year will be a better year.

If I Ruled the World - Angelica

If I was the ruler of planet earth, wouldn't it be nice if the world was cad-bury? I'd make everything chocolate. Also I would command everyone and they would do what I say. Lastly there would be no such thing as poverty and hunger. Everyone would be fed, clothed, nurtured, qualified and everyone would be treated the same and all live happily ever after :)

My Perfect Lesson - Angelica

I wish that my perfect lesson would be to learn in a room with ONE DIRECTION posters everywhere on the walls, comfortable sofas to sit on like in Mrs Dunn's classroom, music blasted, everyone happy and smiley especially the teachers, the teachers to not be so strict and give us a lot of work to do, to learn about the history of one direction and other celebrities, to take trips to go see one direction and fly around the world to different countries, to have food and drink provided, to be allowed to play on our electronic items such as iPod's, phones, i-pads, however also for the teacher to make learning more easier, understandable and more fun and entertaining.

What does RESPECT mean to me at HOME, SCHOOL AND CHURCH?

RESPECT at HOME to me means listening to my parents, helping out with duties, and relating to one another such as my siblings and parents in a more polite way, so that we can all feel happy and safe in the environment and home we live in.

RESPECT at SCHOOL to me means putting in a lot of effort and as much as I can in whatever I do as much as my teachers put in. Also to be considerate of others, use my manners and show a positive attitude towards the teachers, staffs and students.

RESPECT at CHURCH to me means being appreciative of what God has done and to thank him. Also to be quiet during mass, be manner able and to be respectful when I am in God's house.

RESPECT IS A VIRTUE THAT YOU SHOULD SHOW, NO MATTER WHERE YOU ARE,

OR WHERE YOU GO! :) 

Star Dome - Angelica

On Friday 7th of June was my first time going to Stardome, not only that it was my first trip with my new year level fellow students at my new school, which is why that was my highlight of our trip. I enjoyed all the laughter, food, exploration and especially the company. I got the opportunity to know the year 9's more and hang out as a year level somewhere else than school. I felt that I built a strong bond and friendship with everyone especially with my classmates of 9PFN. Even though I ruined my time there by getting in trouble I still managed to enjoy myself and learn new things about the planets, the moon, sun and more and get to explore the inside of Stardome and the outside further and closer area of the Stardome building. Thumbs up for that trip and cannot wait for another year 9 outing trip, fingers crossed would be soon.  WHAT AN EXPERIENCE! :)

Angelica - Bullying

Why is it difficult for parents / schools / teachers to do anything when bullying happens?

Personally, I think that firstly at some stages it is hard for us to let out the truth and speak it all out. Secondly I think that whomever is scared to ask for help and talk it all out to our parents because knowing them and how much they will care for us it might cause more trouble and a huge conflict. Lastly one difficult thing is that whomever is getting bullied could stay quiet, not talk to anyone and choose their own direction to walk without asking for help which is why it is difficult for parents etc to prevent it as they might not have a clue what is going on with what is going on. To add on to that also, the person getting bullied might keep a smile on their face where ever and when ever not telling people that the smile is showing how strong that person it but deep down they are hurt.

Angelica - Athletics

Last week Thursday the whole school had our annual Athletics day which was when our 4 houses, Puriri, Kowhai, Totara and Rata came together to work together physically and get to know each other better. 

My highlight for Athletics was the whole day. Even though my house, Puriri came last I am so glad that we finally came a better place then last. 

I enjoyed my first ever Athletics at college and is looking forward for another year next year.

Hello this week for homework I have been studying on a friend named Sylvia Muaiava. Sylvia attended Point England for her years 1 to 8 and throughout her time at Point England her best memories was nothing. 

Now Sylvia has moved on from her primary and intermediate days up to now to her college days and so far she has enjoyed making new friends and experiencing new things as a year 9. 

Sylvia's favourite film is Monters Inc. Her favourite Television show is Sponge Bob Square Pants. 

Food Sylvia enjoys eating is anything that is nice and yummy. She enjoys listening to music by 2Pac, a famous rapper and singer.

Lastly for Sylvia's hobbies, she loves playing sports and eating.
