Matariki is the Maori name for the cluster of stars also known as the Pleiades. It rises just once a year, in mid-winter – late May or early June. For many Māori, it heralds the start of a new year. Matariki literally means the 'eyes of god.’ There are seven stars in Matariki. They are named Waiti, Waita, Waipuna arangi, Tipuanuku, Tipuarangi, Ururangi and Matariki.

Samoa became independent from New Zealand in 1962. The capital of Samoa is Apia. In 2012, the population was 188,889. The Samoan flag has 5 stars and is red and blue.

My Options Next Year - Chelsea

Next year, as a year 11 student, I am really looking forward to the new options we get to choose from. I'd most likely choose catering, physical education. To me, these subjects are the ones that'll keep me well occupied.

When I leave college, I would like to be a traveller. My dream has always been to travel around the world, exploring new things.

Integrity - Chelsea

What does integrity mean?  

To me, the word integrity means the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles. Doing the right thing.

Integrity at school - Is being honest. Being respectful towards of people and others property. Being fair. 

Teach Me Something - Chelsea

I am going to be teaching you how to click your knuckles in the weirdest way

1.  Grab a friend or member to help you through this. Face your hands together and fold your ring fingers over each other.

2. Next, you fold your pinky fingers down and tuck your other fingers in. Leave your thumbs facing each other.

3. Grab someone who is willing to click your knuckles or fingers and sit still

4. They fold their fingers against each other and crush your knuckles. It sounds sore, but really, it just feels like a little pinch. You know when you have done it correctly when you hear a clicking sound

First Week Back - Chelsea

On the last day of the holidays, I couldn't wait to start back at school. I had everything ready including my stationary and other equipment I may need. I actually missed seeing everyone's face including the teachers. It felt like it had been over a year since I hadn't seen them.

Seeing new students enter Tamaki College felt weirder than ever. New people and teachers, I had to meet them. Last Friday we had our powhiri to welcome the new students to Tamaki College. Hearing the senior boys performing the haka made me feel proud to be a student at our school. My legs started to hurt after a while, as we had to sit there on the marae for almost two hours.

This is my second year at Tamaki College, and I can tell you, IT HAS BEEN AMAZING. I cant wait to continue the year as a year 10 student.

Chelsea - Feedback

This year from my friends, I have learnt to respect them correctly and to tell someone before the problem gets more difficult to deal with. I have learnt that people who come to school more often have a better chance of getting NCEA level 1. My teachers have inspired me to do my best in all my work and to do things at the best of my ability. I think that I have helped people to feel good towards themselves. From people outside of my classroom, I have learnt that smoking and drinking are both bad. Therefore, we should help them stop. I have learnt to stay safe on sites such as Facebook and not give any information that may get you in trouble.

What would I do if I ruled the world?

Hmm... I would punish anyone who forces me to run.

I would make teachers give us no homework and if they disobey what I say, Ill fire them on the spot.

The last thing I would do is make broccoli illegal to eat.

My Perfect Lesson - Chelsea

My perfect classroom would have couches that we can sit on and music playing. Everyone would be enjoying their selves with their lunch on one side. My perfect classroom would involve the subjects, art, music, and ICT. My teacher would be someone that lets friends from other classes join in and lets us talk during tests. That is what my perfect classroom would be like.

Respect - Chelsea

What does respect mean to me?

Being respectful is a very important thing to do. You have to decide on your decision, is it kind? is it true? and is it necessary? if these questions are responding with the answer no, don't do it.

You have to be respectful EVERYWHERE you go. At school, home and even in church (if you go) Show respect to your parents, teachers and other adults. Admire people and their thoughts. Don't just look at the speaker when they're speaking but listen to what they have to say. Having respect is one of the most important things in the world

Star Dome - Chelsea

It was an extremely amazing day for all year nine students to learn about the solar system and how it works. Each class travelled by bus to Stardome where we observed meteors and learnt about the planets and matariki.

As we walked in, we safely locked our bags into a cage. Walking into a room where the displayed graphics were going to be shown, I felt as if I was already up in space. Time flew, your imagination ran wild and so much information was going into your head. The day had just began.

After being in this mind blowing room, we all explored the different things out in space and fun facts like how much you would way on the moon. We then had a lesson on matariki and how far these seven stars were from planet earth.

It was time for our break. Everyone was outside enjoying the refreshing air. We swung on the swings, rid the flying fox and just sat down relaxing in the cozy sunshine. We were all exhausted, but on the other hand, we were about to walk up One Tree Hill. As our distance got shorter and shorter to reach the top, we started running. I was relieved to reach the top but now, it was coming down. This part of our trip was MUCH easier.

We had a little rest and then it was time to head back to school. I had an amazing day and learnt so many things along the way. 

Chelsea - Bullying

Why is it difficult for parents , schools , teachers to do anything when bullying happens?

The thing that I find difficult when bullying happens is that the person who bully's you might tell you not to tell anyone. There for the children who get bullied feel even more afraid because the bullier might smash them over for telling an adult. My advice to all the children who get bullied, just tell someone then you don't need to worry. Or just stick with a group of friends.

Chelsea - Athletics

Tamaki College held a day full with, skills, participation and fun called athletics  The four houses lined up ready to perform their chant in front of the other houses. Puriri, Kowhai, Totara and Rata all had exceptional chants. 

My house, the best of course came second overall. That was an amazing improvement from the last few years. As we walked on the field bursting out with words, that made us really proud. It was like blue paint been spread over the field.

I participated in the year 10 100 meter race. Even though I wasnt at the same year as the rest of the students, Illy and I strived to succeed. I came fourth and I'm not too sure what Illy came. All also tried discus. The disk compared to my hands was huge. I just couldn't seem to get a good grip of it.  

My lazy friends, Aalyzah and Tynisha hadn't done anything, they just sat in the sun. I LOVE doing athletics at Tamaki College because you don't need to get involved in anything. You can watch everyone, eat ice blocks and have a drink, or you can have some fun in some of the different activities there were.  

This was the best athletics day EVER and I can't wait until next year.
