The characters that make up Japan's name mean "sun-origin" which is why Japan is often referred to as the "Land of the Rising Sun".

Japan over all is made up of 6,852 islands but is mainly known for its four main islands Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku, which together comprise about ninety-seven percent of Japan's land area.



Japan has two main religions which are Shintoism and Buddhism. Religion is little discussed in everyday life and the majority of Japanese do not worship regularly or claim to be religious.






Japan is known for their local speciality whether it be a type of sweet, fish, noodle, seaweed or tofu. In everyday life Japanese people often talk about food. Rice is one of Japan's main food which is seen in most traditional dishes and rice has been a staple food for the Japanese for over 2000 years.





Traditional Japanese music usually refers to Japan's historical folk music. One of the defining characteristics of traditional Japanese music is its sparse rhythm. Traditional Japanese music has three main types, instrumental, court music, and theatrical.












Sport plays a significant part in the fabric of modern day Japanese life. From a young age children join school teams, instilling a sense of camaraderie, pride, hard work and dedication. Sports such as baseball, badminton, tennis and football are popular but Japan is better known for more traditional sports such as Sumo.
